Description

In his #1 New York Times bestseller Agents of the Apocalypse, noted prophecy expert Dr. David Jeremiah explored the book of Revelation through the lens of its major players. Now, in the much-anticipated follow-up, Agents of Babylon, Dr. Jeremiah examines prophecy through the eyes of the characters in the book of Daniel, explains what the prophecies mean, and helps us understand how these prophetic visions and dreams apply to our lives today. Written in the same highly engaging half dramatization, half Bible teaching format as Agents of the Apocalypse, Agents of Babylon is not only an in-depth exploration of the characters and prophecies contained in the book of Daniel but also a dramatic retelling of Scripture that is sure to bring ancient prophecy to light like never before.

This is a readable, layman''s approach to a "commentary" on the Old Testament book of Daniel. The author takes a conservative, dispensational approach to his understanding of the book. This is the same basic position that I take. His explanations are clear, and his applications to contemporary life are appropriate. For all of those items, I would give the book a 5-star rating.
However, two significant areas caused me to give the overall book a 4-star rating. One of those is the fact that much of the book is not written by David Jeremiah at all. Each chapter begins with a narrative story, taking the content of the book of Daniel, and approaching it from a narrative perspective. These opening narratives are well-written, designed to capture a reader''s attention, and succeed well in forming a suspenseful and imaginative introduction to each chapter. The difficulty I have with the book is that none of these narratives was written by David Jeremiah. A reader must carefully read the "Acknowledgments" at the end of the book to discover they were all written by Tom Williams. To be fair, Mr. Williams'' name should be identified as a co-author of the book.
The second area that concerns me is that Dr. Jeremiah uses old commentaries to support his interpretations. For examples, he relies heavily on books by Leon Wood (1973), John F. Walvoord (1971), H. A. Ironside (1920), H. C. Leupold (1949), etc. While these are good sources for understanding Daniel, it would help Jeremiah''s book greatly if he would have also interacted with more current scholarship on the book. Suggested additions could include Andrew Hill, "Daniel," Expositor''s Bible Commentary, 2008; Paul R. House and David G. Firth, Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary, 2018; and Rodney D. Stortz, Daniel (ESV edition): The Triumph of God''s Kingdom, 2016, etc.

I was highly disappointed to discover Dr. David Jeremiah often references the work of people who either practice or support philosophies and/or religions which keep people’s feet on the broad road to destruction.

Consider the following, do some research, and judge for yourselves

2001 - Quotes Henri Nouwen in church services

2002 - Endorses back cover of Erwin McManus'' book, Seizing Your Divine Moment

2003, 2005 - In his book, Life Wide Open, Jeremiah favorably quotes the following New Agers, Buddhists and contemplatives,( i.e. mystics):
Sue Monk Kidd

Peter Senge (Buddhist sympathizer)
Jim Collins
Calvin Miller
Erwin McManus

St. John of the Cross

Brother Lawrence
David Seamands
Eugene Peterson
Rick Warren

2003 - David Jeremiah''s church, Shadow Mountain, encourages their men to become involved with contemplative spirituality. Currently, Pastor John Gillette of Shadow Mountain encourages the use of Richard Foster''s book, Celebration of Discipline.

2005 - Signs on with Ken Blanchard and Laurie Beth Jones in the Lead Like Jesus conference.

2006 - David Jeremiah''s New Book, Captured by Grace Captured by Grace Discusses Henri Nouwen and includes endorsement by Ken Blanchard

November 2006 - David Jeremiah Quotes Erwin McManus in Sermon

Throughout 2007 - Jeremiah continues to promote Life Wide Open

November 2007 - David Jeremiah quotes New Ager M. Scott Peck on Turning Point, after identifying him as part of the New Age movement in 1995 in his book, Invasion of Other Gods.

This was shocking to me, especially since Dr. David Jeremiah is a graduate of a very conservative seminary in Dallas.

However it is equally shocking that many conservative seminaries are caving and compromising with the world to get accredited. Under pressure of the institutes for accreditation they have begun to incorporate spiritual formation into their curriculum.

Paul warned us of a coming apostasy in the church (2 Thessalonians 2:3). Judging by all this I think we have arrived.

In the parable of the wheat and the tares Jesus said that the tares were planted while the workers were asleep. We Christians need to wake up.

Each chapter in Dr. Jeremiah''s book starts with a narrative storyline, a little like reading a short story, to familiarize us with the events in Daniel''s life. We get a thorough and easy-to-grasp explanation of what this unique book is about and why it is important for us today. The first half of the Book of Daniel is less challenging, but then if you stick with it, you are drawn into the amazing revelations he received, mostly in his old age, much of which he himself did not understand. Dr. Jeremiah does an excellent job of presenting the story of his long sojourn in Babylon, his career as a high ranking government official, his dedication to prayer, and his faithfulness to God in spite of losing so much when he was only a teenager. Daniel was taken captive from Jerusalem, and from his native Israel, which he would never see again. There is so much to unpack in just 12 Bible chapters, and sometimes cutting through all the imagery and animal metaphors can be a daunting task . But David Jeremiah makes it as easy and as satisfying as anyone possibly could. I highly recommend this book.

Up until this book, I never completely understood the importance and relevance of Daniel to prophecy nor how well this Old Testament book relates to what Jesus said in Matthew and what John wrote about in Revelation in the New Testament. Dr. Jeremiah clearly reveals everything God intended for us to know about what is coming after the Rapture and what His chosen people are going to experience during that time. It is a book that will arouse all of the feelings people should experience when they learn of God''s complete plan for and total control of His creation - fear yet reassurance, mystery and intrigue yet with ease of understanding, apprehension but followed by hope, sadness then joy, and proof without any doubt about the accuracy and dependability of divine scripture and God''s omniscience. It is so encouraging while urging us to be diligent about doing the work He has planned for us while we still have the time. If there is anyone who feels that he doesn''t have the ability to understand biblical prophecy, whether Old Testament or New, then this book will inspire you to dig deeper, to study those things God has put out there for us to know and understand, to greatly anticipate what He has in store for us, and to seriously long for His return.

I thought this was going to be cheesy, but it''s not! For each chapter (so far I''ve read only 6 of the 12 chapters covered in Daniel) Dr. Jeremiah writes a historical fictionalized account (which is gripping!) then something akin to, but better than, a commentary on said chapter. Our pastor is covering a book of Daniel each week, so it has been very illuminating to read ahead of his sermon each week, so as to have a greater understanding of such a mysterious book. So if you''re vacillating on whether to buy the book, it really is worth it.

With all the crazy things that are happening today, it is so calming to hear over and over how God has everything in control and I need not worry. I just have to continue working for Him and his kingdom which will come. He has seen all of the present evil thousands of years ago and has laid out a plan for a victory for those who love him and are called to His purpose. The book of Daniel is amazing and Dr Jeremiah is wonderful at explaining what it means to us today.

Excellent book. This book is different than most books on prophecy. Jeremiah tells a fiction based of fact story about each ot the ''agents'', who are the major players in the book of Revelation. Then he goes into the Biblical background for each of these agents. It is a valuable book on prophecy and is an easy read for those not real familiar with prophecy. I loaned mine to a neighbor who is very interested in prophecy, but I am not sure he is a believer - yet!/ He loved the book; read it in a week. I highly recommend this book.

In a world that appears to be growing darker and drifting further and further from the light of God''s Word, comes the message of hope penned by Daniel in his time of captivity. It brings hope to us today, no matter what things appear to have us held captive God is with us and working out His purpose for our good, all He asks is to continue to trust Him and He will work it all out for our good. We may not know what lies ahead in the future, but we can know who it is that holds the future in His hands. So we keep our eyes focused upon Him the Ancient of Days until the day when we will know as we are fully known, the day when our eyes see Jesus Christ in His glory as King of Kings and Lord of Lord''s. Thank you Daniel for keeping the Word preserved so that we today can read and understand these truths.

I always remember reading Daniel when I was younger. I as a Christian look forward to the time when God rules his kingdom. I didn''t realize the relevance of the book of Daniel to revelation. Now it has been explained I can see how Daniels visions dreams and devotional contact with God gave him an insight into the apocalypse. Though he didn''t know it he was given a truly unique view into what is going to be a chaotic time. A time of great suffering and a time of great wonder. We must see too, and be ready for God and let the kingdom come, and his will be done. Time is short!!!! Be ready.
