Product Description

Like Smallville did for Superman, Merlin is a new drama series that updates the story of the infamous sorcerer of Arthurian legend for a new audience. In a time before history began, the mythical city of Camelot was a fantastical realm and a dangerous world in which magic has been banned by the ruthless tyrant Uther Pendragon. When Merlin, a young man gifted with extraordinary magical powers, arrives in the kingdom, he discovers his destiny and that of the kingdom''s young leader in waiting,Arthur, are inextricably linked.

The creators of Merlin position their hero as the original Harry Potter: a headstrong young wizard with mixed feelings about--and sometimes outright hostility toward--the destiny that''s been thrust upon him. Merlin is a reboot of Arthurian legend, starting when all the heroes and sorcerous folk were teenagers, bursting with hormones and wrestling with the powers-that-be, particularly Arthur''s heavy-handed father, Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head, best known as Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), a benevolent tyrant who''s banished magic from Camelot. Merlin (Colin Morgan, an impish lad with prominent ears) comes to the kingdom with high hopes and innate magical powers. He''s taken under the wing of the court physician, Gaius (Richard Wilson, One Foot in the Grave), but additionally becomes the servant of young Arthur (Bradley James), a handsome and talented fighter who''s also a bully and a snob. Rounding out the main cast are Morgana (Katie McGrath), who will one day be Merlin''s foe but is now Uther''s ward, and Gwen (Angel Coulby), a.k.a. Guinevere, the woman who will one day be the center of a legendary love triangle--but who is now Morgana''s maid. Clearly, Merlin wants to shake up any preconception about these stuffy old stories, presenting a multi-ethnic Camelot with contemporary language and attitudes.

Despite all this, Merlin quickly becomes addictive. The dialogue and special effects can be cheesy (particularly when the CGI monsters have to interact with actors), but the cast is charming and the stories, while a tad formulaic, keep things moving. Morgan is appropriately dweeby (but also has killer cheekbones), James combines football-quarterback good looks with a hint of sensitivity, McGrath is luscious and impetuous, and Coulby has earthy spunk. The heavy lifting, acting-wise, is ably handled by Head and Wilson. The first season deftly explores the origins of the pillars of Arthurian mythos, from the sword Excalibur to a very dashing (but born of peasant stock) Lancelot to the mysterious birth of Arthur himself. Add to it all an imprisoned dragon, voiced by John Hurt (Alien, The Elephant Man) and prone to cryptic but sometimes helpful advice, and you have an engaging fantasy series. In addition to 13 episodes, there''s an additional disk with making-of features and video diaries of the young cast gallivanting around France. --Bret Fetzer

I can''t say enough about how delighted I was by this new rendering of an old tale. A young teenaged Merlin walks into Camelot to get a job and runs into Arthur, who he immediately calls an ass. They do not get along at first, but then Merlin begins to realize he must help the prince to become the king he is meant to be, despite his original opinion of Arthur. The two become inseparable, Merlin as Arthur''s servant, and though they seem to hate each other... a bond forms between them that changes how Arthur sees the world and his role in it. There are sword fights, jousts, enemies of Camelot everywhere and Merlin can only use his magic when no one sees it or he''ll be killed by King Uther who has declared war on all magic. The creative way he goes about saving Arthur''s life without being caught at it, the jibes he tosses at the prince about how many times he''s saved his life when he can''t actually tell him how, how he learns to be a good servant washing the prince''s cloths and polishing his armor and getting his meals can sometimes be hilarious. Then just as Arthur thinks Merlin might actually be wise because of the counsel he gives, Merlin trips over his own feet or drops the chamber pot and Arthur changes his mind. The slow metamorphosis of Morgana from a sweet ward of Uther to her more evil persona underlies much of the story as does Arthur''s growing fondness for the serving girl Gwenivere. This is NOT your typical Arthurian Legend! If you don''t want to see a completely different version, don''t buy this series. But if you have an open mind and love swords and jousting, monsters and magic, a newly realized Merlin and Arthur.. this is the series for you.

After more than a 20 year hiatus, the BBC brings one of their shows to a major American network. Merlin is that show, and how very much worth the wait it was.

Based on Arthurian legends, Merlin is the story of a young man destined to become a great Sorcerer. Merlin, both blessed and cursed with incredible gifts of magic, is sent by his mother to the legendary Camelot to seek comfort and like-minded people. Once he arrives, he finds out that all magic has been banned from the kingdom by the cold-hearted King Uther Pendragon and anyone found practising will be immediately sentenced to death. He is taken in by Gaius, the Court physician, who quickly becomes his mentor. After saving the life of Uther''s son, Arthur, Merlin is hired as the Prince''s manservent. He quickly becomes echanted by the King''s ward, the beautiful Lady Morgana (who has "gifts" of her own), and befriends her servent Guinevere. As the series progresses, Merlin becomes increasingly more powerful and it becomes difficult for him to hide his gifts from those around him. Only Gaius and the wise Great Dragon (behind held captive in the castle''s dungeon, to whom Merlin often goes for wisdom and guidance) know his true self.

This is a beautifully shot, brilliantly scripted, wonderfully acted show. The actors are phenominal in their understated style and are all so very talented, and deliver their material flawlessly with immense grace, so much that you forget they are acting. The production value is superb (that is one awesome, fearful dragon). The story every week has heart, humor and shows the evolution of the characters in a poignant way. In every great legendary story is tragedy and heartbreak, and Merlin is no exception. Each character goes through a personal tragedy in some way, giving the show a serious Shakespearean quality.

Now, onto the DVD set itself. The transfers are high quality, meaning you get sharp & clear video and crisp audio. The packaging is standard (the cardboard "booklet" is a tri-fold and the show discs slightly overlap one another). The real gem about this set, however, are the special features! There are hours of fantastic featurettes featuring the entire cast in candid moments, in all stages of production. I honestly can''t remember the last time I enjoyed features as much as these. I laughed out loud more times than I can count!

To summarize, if you haven''t seen "Merlin" yet, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this DVD set. Take several hours and immerse yourself in a land of myth and a time of magic.

Having given this first season to myself as a Christmas treat, I sat down to watch the first episode yesterday. Nine episodes later I was still watching. I think the acting is superb. If you are on the edge of your seat worrying about characters getting killed that you know grow up to be adults then the actors have done their job. Usually in magical productions, the characters are much more two-dimensional. Here, you have real people, even with the magic. They make mistakes, sometimes what seems to be a good idea turns out to be a bad idea. I love the dragon (I like dragons) and John Hurt has done an excellent job (as always) with the voice. I love the scenery. ''Cheesy'' is when they do everything on a sound stage - that''s ''cheesy''. This production has plenty of scenes that expand out into the ''real world''. I like that I know the story so I know how these characters will turn out - turning this into a prequel of how it all came to be. Before I went to bed last night, I ordered season 2.

Merlin once again gives an interesting spin to pre-Arthurian Legend with Lancelot and Guinevere.

Although we know Gwen (Guinevere) as a servant, a departure from the legends, we now have Lancelot being introduced as not just a commoner, but one whose heart belongs to Guinevere as only one can when "love at first sight" happens. Merlin is the catalyst. Lancelot saves Merlin''s life, and as thanks he wants to make Lancelot''s dream to be a knight of Camelot a reality. But Merlin also sets in motion the start of Guinevere''s and Lancelot''s romance when he enlists Gwen''s help in outfitting Lancelot to pretend he is of noble birth to gain that knighthood.

This is one of those episodes that is so sweet with the tentative looks and actions of the two sweethearts, and the nobility and humility of Lancelot. Angel Coulby and Santiago Cabrera seem perfectly matched as the two lovers. The musical themes used to highlight the romance between them and the bravery of Lancelot seem to underscore those moments quite brilliantly.

A very enjoyable take on the Legend of Guinevere and Lancelot.

Once again Merlin takes our notions of what the sword of Excalibur is meant for and turns it into something more powerful than just a weapon for Arthur.

As with all things with the show, Merlin himself, along with the powerful magic of the Great Dragon, once again is instrumental in creating Excalibur, one of the best known symbols of Arthurian legend. Although its creation stems from the past mistakes of King Uther Pendragon. The use of a wraith, summoned by the sorceress Nimue to avenge the death of Uther''s wife Igraine, as the reason for creating Excalibur is a very novel approach for creating a weapon that is made specifically for Arthur to destroy that which is already dead.

This episode more than the others shows Uther as more than just a cold-hearted king with a pathological fear of magic, but a warrior king and a self-sacrificing father. Uther is a complex man here.

This is another episode that provides the origin of one more symbol for those familiar with some of the Arthurian legends -- but in its own "Merlin-esque" way.

A friend of mine had told me about Merlin a couple of years ago - she really liked it - and said she was sure I would enjoy it. She was right. This is my new favorite show. The show is very well done and is very entertaining. Everything is first rate. They have put their own "spin" on the Arthurian tale, but I like THIS version of the Arthurian tale better. DON''T compare to the known Arthurian legend - take this show for itself!!!

I noticed one reviewer gave this show a really bad review - obviously, they didn''t get it, or just didn''t like the subject matter.
This DVD HAS English subtitles for the hearing impaired and some nice extras. I''m only sorry there are only 13 shows. It''s a bit pricey (for only 13 shows) so I will keep an eye on the other seasons to go on sale. I am looking forward to the other seasons.

This is a very good series and as there are many leading characters who are not that well known it is fresh and certainly a welcome change to the usual rubbish on the terrestrial TV. It is an interesting storyline and the interaction between two of the main characters I find very funny, I often find myself laughing out loud, the so called comedies of the moment cannot achieve even a smile from me. There are many sword fighting scenes and some people may not want their children to watch them if they are a very young age, but there are no gory or bloody scenes on show.

MERLIN is a brilliant, mindblowing, breathtaking magical TV program that is on the TV every saturday night, usually from September to December. Here is my thoughts of all the episodes in this series. Episode 1-an impressive and magically chilling first episode that introduces Merlin, Gwen, Uther, Arther, Morgana, Gaius and many more. 9/10 Episode 2-a gripping second episode which introduces the cunning night valiant. However it is not as good as the first episode. 8/10 Episode 3-a scary, violent and unexpectedly harsh third episode that introduces the evil witch Nimuea who causes death and horror at camelot. 10/10 Episode 4-a kind of second part that continues with the tale of Nimuea who plots to kill Merlin and Arthur. 9/10 Episode 5-an exciting but weak fifth episiode in the awesome series. 7/10 Episode 6-Scary, talented, unexpected and gruesome, this sixth story tells the story of a creepy pysician who atacks Morgana, Uther and plots to get rid of old Gaius! 10/10 Episode 7-an extraorinary episode that introduces Sophia, the mysterious and suspicious girl from the forest. 10/10 Episode 8-awesome, scary and bloody eight episode that brings Merlin close to being rated 12. Loved it! Asa Butterfield is cool! but is he evil lor not? 9/10 Episode 9-a gripping, battle scene makes up for Arthur''s irritating ''bravery''. 8/10 Episode 10-a dull and pointless episode. But ace acting and the best MERLIN battler at the end proves that MERLIN can easily make up for its mistakers. 8/10 Episode 11-a tiresome but nevertheless enjoyable eleventh episode. 7.5/10 Episode 12-Morgana begins to reveal her thoughts when she plots to kill Uther as he destroys her maid''s father. Exciting, scary and intense, the best episode of series 1. 10/10 Episode 13-this final episode returns Nimuea who tries to put a stop to everything that is good. Who will win, as Merlin and Nimuea battle for destiny? 10/10 So overall a brilliant series. I have watched series 1, 2 & 3 and i cannot wait for series 4. I will review the other series''s now. WATCH THIS!

Having been told how brilliant this is, I decided to start at the beginning with series 1- and I''m really glad I did! A great TV show for the family, it''s nice to find something kids and grandparents can all enjoy together. At times it''s light hearted with some good one liners but the writers also explore some more serious issues, and some episodes might even be a bit scary/upsetting for very young children. Sometimes it feels quite modern although it''s not meant to be but overall I didn''t find this took anything away from the series. The actors and actresses are great, you can empathise with the characters and the relationships seem very natural. Stories are good with some more stand alone episodes and some which follow on. The extras DVD is worth a watch, the usual behind the scenes and commentaries but interesting for Merlin fans! Put the next series on your wish list - after a couple of episodes, I was hooked.

Beautiful costumes and scenery. The series doesn''t pretend to give you "the truth" of the Arthur myth but brings it to a credible whole. A must for Arthur legend fans. I also enjoyed the behind the scene chats and information. Delivery was reasonably on time despite weather conditions. Thank you.

I rated this series 5 stars mainly because it drew me into the show within a few minutes of the first episode. If I look at this series critically though, there are some issues in Series 1. First, to be honest some of the acting could have been much better. I''m picky when it comes to acting and I was surprised that even though the acting was bad at times by a few minor characters I was able to look away from it. Why? The plot and characters! I also loved how they made each episode its own. My personal favourite characters are indeed Merlin, Arthur and Gaius...>.< The second flaw which I should point out is that the CGI could have been a bit better too... the dragon is well done and the castle, but a few other creatures during the show didn''t look... right to me. As the show progresses though, the acting gets WAY better... I might even say AMAZING acting, especially from Colin Morgan. The CGI also seems to have improved for the better!
